Celebrated Coach Tubby Smith to Join the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame
Renowned for his significant contributions to college basketball, Orlando “Tubby” Smith is set to be honored with induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026. The ceremony will take place on October 22 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Smith’s career is notably marked by his impactful tenure at the University of Georgia from 1995 to 1997. Under his leadership, the Georgia Bulldogs achieved back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, a milestone that underscored Smith’s coaching prowess.
During his initial season with Georgia, Smith led the team to the Sweet 16. This achievement included a victory over Clemson and a surprising upset against top-seeded Purdue, eventually ending in an overtime loss to Syracuse, the national runner-up that year. His second year saw the Bulldogs secure a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the highest in the school’s history, while also tying the school record with 24 wins and advancing to the SEC Tournament championship game.
Over a 31-year career in college coaching, Smith compiled an impressive 642-370 record. He guided five different programs to a total of 18 NCAA Tournament appearances, further cementing his legacy with a national championship win at Kentucky in 1998.
Smith’s induction into the Hall of Fame is a testament to his enduring impact on collegiate basketball, celebrating a career filled with notable achievements and contributions to the sport.
