Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus to Transform into Golf Course, Center

Developers' plans for Penn State Wilkes-Barre include golf course and event center, academic space for Misericordia

The picturesque Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus may soon transform into a vibrant hub for golf enthusiasts and event planners. A proposal by HGC Development, LLC aims to purchase the 57-acre site in Lehman Township for $5.25 million, providing a new lease on life for the campus, which is set to close after the spring 2027 semester.

This development plan, recently reviewed by the Penn State Board of Trustees finance committee, includes leasing the academic facilities to Misericordia University. This collaboration could pave the way for graduate studies and workforce development programs.

Jeff Metz, John D. McCarthy, and Doug Barbacci, the business leaders behind HGC Development, envision a multi-purpose complex featuring a golf course, event venue, and community programming. The initiative promises to save on university expenses related to utilities and maintenance while preventing the property from remaining unused.

“We see this as an opportunity to preserve something important to Northeastern Pennsylvania,” said Angelo C. Terrana, HGC’s spokesperson, reflecting the developers’ commitment to maintaining the site’s character while unlocking future opportunities.

The proposed sale of the property has sparked debate and inquiry, with some local leaders expressing concern over the opacity of the transaction process.

Academic Collaborations on the Horizon

Misericordia University is exploring a partnership with HGC, which could see it leasing nearly half of the campus’ square footage for academic purposes. University President Daniel J. Myers emphasized the mutual benefits this collaboration could provide, highlighting the opportunity to enhance student, employer, and community engagement.

“This opportunity reflects the kind of innovative partnership that can benefit students, employers, communities, and the regional economy,” Myers stated. He further noted that any future educational initiatives at the site would complement current operations at Misericordia’s main campus, creating convenience and opportunity for all involved.

With Misericordia recently welcoming its largest freshman class ever, the potential expansion into the Wilkes-Barre campus aligns with its mission to foster educational growth and regional development.
