The anticipation for Nebraska’s season opener against Ohio is matched only by the temperatures expected to sizzle through Lincoln this Saturday. As the Huskers prepare for their debut, the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory that extends until 7 p.m. Central time, with temperatures anticipated to soar into the upper 90s and heat indices reaching triple digits.
In response to the scorching forecast, Husker Athletics has permitted fans to bring one sealed bottle of water into Memorial Stadium. Additionally, personal empty water bottles are always allowed, providing fans the chance to utilize the stadium’s water fountains.
Nebraska aims for a fiery start to the season, having achieved a 3-0 record in non-conference play and a 5-1 start overall in the last two seasons. However, maintaining momentum beyond October has been a challenge. Head coach Matt Rhule, who stands at a 19-19 record over three seasons, faces a critical year with Nebraska slated to compete against three of last year’s College Football Playoff teams.
Meanwhile, the team is set to see senior transfer quarterback Anthony Colandrea at the helm. Colandrea, who was recognized as the Mountain West Conference’s offensive player of the year while at UNLV, steps in to replace Dylan Raiola, the former starter who transferred to Oregon after an injury.
Rhule expressed optimism about the potential breakout of young players and stressed the importance of team unity. “The great thing about being at Nebraska is everyone’s watching… it’s all about what you do next,” Rhule said. He emphasized that the focus remains on collective performance rather than individual players.
Ohio, under the lasting influence of former coach Frank Solich, is seen as a formidable and physical opponent. Solich, who led the Bobcats from 2005 to 2020 and previously coached at Nebraska, is credited with stabilizing Ohio’s program.
Ohio fan Mike Wells, a member of the university’s alumni board, is eager to experience Memorial Stadium for the first time. Wells praised Solich, stating, “He’s the winningest coach in Mid-American Conference history… He’s in the Nebraska Hall of Fame twice.” Wells expects Ohio to deliver a strong defensive performance, though acknowledges the offense faces challenges with key players to replace from last year’s 9-4 team.
Significant changes are also underway for Nebraska’s coaching staff, with Rob Aurich set to become the defensive coordinator in 2026 following John Butler’s departure. Aurich brings his expertise from San Diego State, where the defense ranked 11th nationally last season.
Fans attending the game should be aware of potential travel delays due to road construction around Memorial Stadium, potentially adding an hour to their commute as noted here.
The game is scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. Central time and will be broadcast on Fox Sports One.
