University of Michigan Welcomes New Student Ombuds to Enhance Campus Support

The University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus has appointed Mallory Martin-Ferguson as the new student ombuds. This strategic addition to the Division of Student Life is set to commence just before the fall semester, promising a fresh approach to student advocacy and support.

Martin-Ferguson steps into the role previously held by Tom Lehker, a dedicated U-M staff member and alumnus who retired in July after a decade of service as the student ombuds. Her appointment marks a new chapter in the university’s continued commitment to student welfare.

The role of the student ombuds on the Ann Arbor campus is pivotal, providing a confidential and neutral resource for both undergraduate and graduate students. This office addresses a range of university-related queries and concerns through informal channels while remaining independent from formal dispute resolution mechanisms.

Operating without formal decision-making authority, the Office of the Student Ombuds offers impartial advocacy for fair treatment, ensuring equitable solutions for student issues without taking sides.

As Martin-Ferguson expressed, “I am honored to serve as the student ombuds and to support students as they navigate their Michigan experience. My hope is to provide a space where students feel heard, respected, and empowered to find solutions to their concerns.”

Vice President for Student Life Martino Harmon commended Martin-Ferguson for her extensive experience and empathetic approach, stating, “Mallory brings a wealth of experience in the areas of conflict and dispute resolution, policy oversight and administration, community development, and student support. I am thrilled to welcome Mallory back to Student Life as our new Student Ombuds.”

Martin-Ferguson’s career at U-M spans over 12 years, during which she has held various roles, including her current position as director of Graduate Student and Program Consultation Services at the Rackham Graduate School. Her previous experience includes positions as a conflict resolution and academic support specialist in the Rackham Dean’s Office and leadership roles in Housing Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution within Student Life.
