Chad Engelhardt, chair of ICLE’s executive committee, expressed confidence in Kirkey’s capabilities, stating, “We are pleased to announce Jeff’s appointment. We are excited about the leadership he brings and have the utmost confidence in his vision for the organization. With so many new challenges facing lawyers today, Jeff’s strategic planning, relationship-building, and financial acumen will be vital as ICLE continues to set the standard for cutting-edge education.”

Kirkey will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations at ICLE, as well as guiding the organization in achieving both its short-term and long-term goals. His new role will also include financial oversight, administrative policy management, and acting as a representative for the organization in various external interactions.

Having been part of ICLE for 27 years, Kirkey’s journey began in 1998 when he joined as the internet/technology attorney, and he has since risen to the position of chief learning officer. Prior to his tenure at ICLE, he worked at a small law firm in Ann Arbor and managed a computer consulting firm that assisted law offices.

Kirkey is not only active in the Association for Continuing Legal Education but has also served as its president in 2024-25. He frequently presents at ACLEA conferences, focusing on topics such as technology, leadership, and business innovation. A member of the State Bar of Michigan since 1998, Kirkey has held positions such as past chair of its Young Lawyers Section and has contributed to the State Bar’s Board of Commissioners.

Reflecting on his new role, Kirkey said, “I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with the incredible team of staff and contributors at ICLE. Our two previous directors, Dave Watson and Lynn Chard, did a wonderful job of running this exceptional organization. I hope to follow in their footsteps and continue to serve Michigan lawyers with outstanding legal programming, products, and world-class service.”

Kirkey holds a B.A. in political science from the University of Michigan, which he earned in 1994, and obtained his law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1998.

Founded in 1959, the Institute of Continuing Legal Education is supported by an executive committee comprising the State Bar of Michigan, University of Michigan Law School, Wayne State University Law School, University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Cooley Law School, and Michigan State University College of Law.
