The International Black Theatre Festival: A Celebration of Creativity and Culture
Winston-Salem becomes the epicenter of black theatre excellence as the International Black Theatre Festival makes its return on Monday. This vibrant celebration spans six days, offering a rich tapestry of performances, discussions, and cultural experiences.
The festival kicks off with a unique opportunity to engage with Angelica Chéri, the acclaimed playwright of the upcoming Broadway musical Wanted. This initial event is free to the public, providing an inclusive space for theatre enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
The opening gala is set to honor 28 creatives, with the spotlight on Tony Award-winning actress Phylicia Rashad among others. This recognition highlights the significant contributions and achievements of black artists in the theatrical field.
Throughout the festival, attendees can enjoy a variety of ticketed stage productions. In addition to live performances, the festival features film screenings and workshops, all free and accessible to the public, encouraging widespread participation and learning.
The event also includes a vendor’s market and a history tour, offering attendees a deeper insight into the cultural and historical contexts of black theatre. Now in its 37th year, the festival continues to be a beacon of artistic expression and cultural celebration.
