Gas Leak Contained in Downtown Asheville After Evacuation
A gas leak in downtown Asheville prompted the evacuation of several buildings Monday afternoon, as a strong gas odor was detected throughout the commercial business district. The leak has since been contained, according to Enbridge Gas North Carolina.
Persida Montanez, a spokesperson for Enbridge Gas North Carolina, confirmed that the leak, which was identified at 48 College Street, was halted by 7 p.m. The incident was attributed to damage caused by a third party, as stated in Montanez’s email.
Enbridge crews will remain at the location to carry out necessary repairs and to restore natural gas service to affected customers. “Crews will remain onsite to conduct repairs and restore natural gas service to the customers who are impacted,” Montanez noted.
The situation unfolded when the Asheville Fire Department received a report of a potential gas leak at 3:12 p.m. at 27 N Lexington Ave. They coordinated with the gas company, which assessed the scenario and identified it as an underground gas leak.
