Exploring the Complexities and Judgment Surrounding Free Birth Choices

They want to keep their babies as safe as possible. They’re also choosing free birth

In a world where childbirth often happens within the confines of a hospital, some parents choose a different path. Kreuger, an experienced birth worker, made a bold decision to leave the hospital against medical advice and deliver her baby at home. When her baby, Aurora, crowned, Kreuger quickly lifted the umbilical cord from around her neck, a scenario she had meticulously prepared for.

The Cleveland Clinic notes that while a nuchal cord, where the umbilical cord wraps around a baby’s neck, is generally not dangerous, it must be addressed during delivery to ensure the baby receives adequate oxygen and blood supply. Kreuger’s preparation included watching emergency videos with her husband and learning life-saving techniques from a respiratory therapist.

“I did a lot of planning for emergencies with her. I made my husband watch specific videos,” Kreuger explained.

Despite her thorough planning, Kansas City-area OB-GYN Caitlin Linscheid cautions that childbirth can be unpredictable, with emergencies requiring immediate medical intervention. “Even though it’s a natural process (birth), it doesn’t always go smoothly, it doesn’t always go well,” Linscheid stated. She emphasizes that complications may arise regardless of the care setting.

Linscheid’s own birth experience inspired her career choice. Her mother opted for a home birth with a lay midwife after feeling alienated by unresponsive hospital staff, leading to a challenging labor and recovery. Linscheid reflected, “I found myself really wanting to be the doctor that she should have had access to.”

Her approach to obstetrics involves trauma-informed care, prioritizing patient voices and experiences. This method acknowledges that patients who feel unheard may seek alternatives to mainstream medical care.

Judgment Faced by Free Birthers

Krueger and others who choose unassisted childbirth often confront judgment, with outsiders perceiving their actions as reckless. However, Krueger insists that many free birthers, herself included, engage in prenatal care and are open to seeking emergency medical help if needed.

“There’s nobody in this situation in a birth at all who cares more about the outcome of the birth than the mother,” Kreuger said. “If a mom is choosing unassisted birth, it’s because they truly think that that is the safest route for them and their baby.”

Chalé’s Perspective

Chalé Turner resonates with Krueger’s views, affirming that many women who birth without medical professionals are well-informed. “For me a free birth is a woman taking that ultimate control and autonomy over her birth,” she expressed, clarifying that the decision does not preclude seeking medical help when necessary.
