In a case that has gripped the local community, Colt Gray, a former Apalachee High School student, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The decision was announced on the third day of the sentencing phase by Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm.
Judge Primm expressed his concern over Gray’s apparent lack of remorse, stating, “You do not seem to be tormented by what you did. You seem to relish following in the footsteps of the murderers you idolize. You aren’t wracked with guilt, you’re proud of yourself. Less than a month after the tragedy you weren’t concerned at the horror you wrought, but rather in finding out which mass murderers they were comparing you to.”
The tragic event, which occurred in September 2024, resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two students and two teachers, and left nine others injured. Gray pleaded guilty to 55 charges related to the shooting, which he executed at the age of 14.
Prosecutors argued that Gray aimed to achieve notoriety within the True Crime Community (TCC). “The plan was ultimate and lifelong fame inside the TCC,” stated District Attorney Brad Smith during the proceedings.
The defense, however, highlighted Gray’s unaddressed mental health issues. Defense attorney Charlton Allen remarked, “Colt had issues that his grandmother was… able to identify when he was young, yet his parents didn’t do anything about. Colt got less stability than he needed.”
The possibility of a discretionary appeal remains open to Gray.
In a related development, Colt’s father, Colin Gray, faces sentencing next week after being found guilty of multiple counts for supplying the firearm used in the incident.
