Athens Embraces Rare Winter Weather with Creativity and Community Spirit
The city of Athens transformed into a winter wonderland once again, as residents experienced a second consecutive weekend of snowy weather. For many, including fraternity members and university students, it was an opportunity to relish a rare climatic event in Georgia.
Nick Tootle, affiliated with the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, expressed the novelty of the situation. “Most of us are from Georgia,” he shared. “This is our second snow day in a year, and we hadn’t had one before that in like 10 years. So it’s really great. We’re all grateful for this.”
Embodying the spirit of camaraderie, Tootle and his fraternity brothers decided to embrace the chill with a warm gesture, grilling hot dogs not just for themselves but also for anyone passing by. “We’re out here cooking dogs, not just for the brothers, but for anybody who really wants to come by and eat a dog, and we’re just kind of throwing snowballs hanging out,” Tootle remarked.
Meanwhile, other University of Georgia students like Karina Boyadjiev and Sawyer Crothers found creative ways to enjoy the snow. Boyadjiev mentioned their makeshift sledding equipment, saying, “We got some cardboard boxes and a laundry basket, and we’re going sledding and, like, rolling down the snow.” Crothers added, “We’ve just been wandering around, kind of just seeing the sights. But, yeah, it’s been really– we’re pretty cold, but it’s been fun.”
The National Weather Service reported that Athens received approximately three inches of snow over the weekend, offering residents an uncommon yet delightful break from the usual climate.
