Athens Residents Invited to Shape Future of Historic West Broad School Complex

Residents of Athens have the opportunity to influence the redevelopment of the West Broad School Complex during a public design charrette scheduled for Tuesday, March 31st. This event marks a significant phase in the Clarke County School District’s (CCSD) initiative to rejuvenate the historic site.

The charrette, described as an intensive design workshop, serves as an essential step in the revitalization efforts. The session aims to assess the current state of the buildings, evaluate various renovation possibilities, and involve community participants in the construction planning process.

Previously, CCSD has conducted two public updates regarding the future plans for the West Broad School Complex. Among the proposals is an initiative to utilize the space for the Athens Community Career Academy, specifically for a new construction career pathway aimed at CCSD high school students. Additionally, there is a suggestion to establish a “heritage room” dedicated to preserving the area’s educational history.

The charrette will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Vernon Payne Meeting Hall, located in the District Office at 595 Prince Ave.
