Athens-Clarke County Commission to Decide on Fiscal Year 2027 Budget and Tax Relief Proposal
The Athens-Clarke County Commission will make crucial decisions in a special session on Tuesday night, focusing on the county’s fiscal planning and potential tax relief measures. The session promises to shape financial strategies impacting residents and visitors alike.
Key items on the agenda include the finalization of the fiscal year 2027 budget and the determination of the 2026 property tax rate. A pivotal decision involves considering a referendum that proposes a 1% Floating Local Option Sales Tax, designed to alleviate property taxes.
The proposed budget ordinance outlines financial allocations for county departments and government initiatives for the upcoming fiscal year. It would establish the 2026 property tax rate at 12.25 mills, with plans for the budget to be enacted on July 1, pending approval.
Another significant consideration for commissioners is the resolution advocating for a countywide referendum on the special 1% sales tax. This tax, intended to last five years, aims to provide property tax relief by redistributing the tax burden. It targets consumers, including visitors and students who spend within the county, shifting the financial load away from property owners.
Should the commissioners endorse this proposal, it will be presented to voters in the upcoming November election. The decision will be made during a meeting commencing at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 301 College Ave., where public commentary is invited before the final vote.
