Governor Roy Cooper announced a significant development in North Carolina’s manufacturing sector with Wieland, a global copper manufacturer, set to expand its operations in the state. The company plans to invest over $27 million to enhance its production facility in Pine Hall, creating 50 new jobs. This expansion aims to cater to the rising market demand in the HVAC, defense, and aerospace sectors. The move underscores North Carolina’s reputation as a manufacturing hub, supported by a skilled workforce and a commitment to innovation.
Wieland, known for its semi-finished copper and copper alloy products, will expand its Pine Hall facility to produce new manufacturing lines. These include “Tech Tubes,” designed to improve heat transfer in air conditioning and refrigeration, and “Cold Plates,” which enhance the performance and lifespan of electronic devices. The expansion is expected to have a substantial economic impact on the region, with new positions offering an average annual wage of $56,900, significantly higher than the Stokes County average.
The investment is supported by a $100,000 performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund, aimed at facilitating economic growth and job creation. The grant requires Wieland to meet specific job creation and investment targets and is contingent on a matching grant from local governments. The expansion is seen as a win for both the local community and key industries in North Carolina, including aerospace, defense, and information technology.
State officials, including N.C. Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders, have lauded the expansion, emphasizing the innovative, green technology Wieland will produce. Local leaders, such as N.C. Senator Dana Jones and N.C. Representative Kyle Hall, expressed their support and enthusiasm for Wieland’s continued commitment to the region. The project is a collaborative effort involving several state and local partners, highlighting the cooperative spirit driving economic development in North Carolina.
