University of Michigan Overhauls Athletic Department Amid Scandals
The University of Michigan is witnessing significant changes within its athletic department following a series of controversies. Athletic Director Warde Manuel has agreed to a buyout and will be stepping down at the end of the year, concluding a tenure marked by both triumphs and turmoil.
President Domenico Grasso announced that the decision aligns with ongoing investigations into former football coach Sherrone Moore’s relationship with an executive assistant and an examination of the department’s culture. In a video statement, Grasso stated, “The broader cultural review has identified serious concerns that require immediate action. These include failures in accountability, structural deficiencies, weaknesses in our reporting and support systems and concerns about retaliation. This is unacceptable.”
An internal report outlined six key recommendations to address and rectify the issues within the department:
Compliance Function
Plans to bolster the independence, visibility, and authority of the compliance function are underway to enhance institutional accountability.
Human Resources Function
Efforts will be made to enhance the accountability and independence of the Athletics HR function through revised reporting structures and improved hiring practices.
Policy Changes
The University aims to implement consistent investigative procedures, including standardized protocols and documentation requirements, ensuring truthful cooperation.
Escalating Misconduct
Processes will be strengthened for identifying and addressing concerns related to student-athlete health, NCAA compliance, and other significant issues.
Athletic Department Leadership and Structure
Leadership accountability and departmental cohesion will be fortified by clearly defining roles, enhancing oversight, and reinforcing accountability and integrity.
Student-Athlete Welfare and Health
The University will expand access to medical and mental health resources for student-athletes, initiate mandatory coach training, and regularly assess wellness and nutrition needs.
Despite the success of Michigan’s men’s basketball and football teams under Manuel’s leadership, these accomplishments were overshadowed by scandals. Manuel dismissed Moore after a law firm’s investigation, costing the university approximately $12 million, revealed inappropriate conduct.
Manuel, who played football at Michigan under Bo Schembechler, had been serving as Athletic Director since 2016. His contract, initially extended through 2030, will now conclude early. Leading a department with a $250 million budget, 29 teams, and over 950 athletes, Manuel’s contribution to Michigan’s athletics was significant.
In 2024, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame honored him with the John L. Toner Award, recognizing his administrative prowess and dedication to college athletics. He also played a vital role as chair of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee during the 2004 season.
Before his role at Michigan, Manuel served as athletic director at UConn and Buffalo, contributing to Michigan’s athletic department from 1996 to 2005.
