Amid a dynamic political landscape, Mara Zúñiga has made her intentions clear. The former Treasurer of the Clark County Republican Party and a prior mayoral candidate, Zúñiga has announced her candidacy for mayor once again.
Describing herself as a “results-driven” advocate, Zúñiga’s campaign will prioritize several pressing issues including affordable housing, homelessness, economic growth, public safety, and infrastructure. Her aim is to strengthen the connection between City Hall, neighborhoods, and local businesses while ensuring strict budget management.
The campaign underscores the importance of restoring trust in local governance and expanding opportunities for small enterprises. Zúñiga’s previous attempt at the mayoral office in 2022 saw her securing about 25% of the vote against the incumbent Mayor Kelly Girtz.
As the Athens-Clarke County prepares for the mayoral election on May 19, 2026, Zúñiga will face opponents Tim Denson, Dr. LaKeisha Gantt, and Commissioner Dexter Fisher. A runoff is scheduled for June 16 if no candidate achieves a majority.
