Governor Josh Stein and North Carolina Department of Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley visited Fairview to showcase Renew NC’s efforts in rehabilitating homes damaged by Hurricane Helene. The visit included a tour of a completed home and highlighted the ongoing work to repair and rebuild properties affected by the storm. Residents in western North Carolina have until December 31, 2025, to apply for assistance through the Renew NC Single-Family Housing Program. This initiative is part of North Carolina’s long-term disaster recovery strategy.
During the visit, Governor Stein met with Fairview resident and artist Lee Pantas, whose home was reconstructed by Renew NC after being damaged by Hurricane Helene. Governor Stein emphasized the importance of the program in restoring stability for those affected by the hurricane. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley highlighted the program’s efficiency, noting that it is the fastest in the country in utilizing HUD’s Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery funding for reconstruction efforts. Stephanie McGarrah, Deputy Secretary of the Division of Community Revitalization, reiterated the program’s goal of creating safe and resilient homes. The Renew NC program is specifically aimed at low- to moderate-income families in the hardest-hit communities, with $807 million in federal funding allocated to address these needs.
