The deadline for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) applications in 39 counties of North Carolina and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has been extended to January 7, 2025. This extension follows approval from the U.S. Department of Labor, responding to the impact of Hurricane Helene. Residents who lost jobs or businesses due to the hurricane are encouraged to apply for financial support. Applications can be submitted via the website des.nc.gov.
The Division of Employment Security initiated the request for an extension, which was approved on December 9. DUA benefits apply to unemployment beginning September 29, 2024, and may continue for up to 26 weeks, through March 29, 2025. Eligibility requires that unemployment be a direct result of Hurricane Helene, and claimants must requalify each week.
DUA provides benefits for individuals unable to work due to the storm. This includes those who lost their primary job, cannot reach their workplace, or were injured. It also covers those unable to start new employment or who become primary income earners due to a storm-related death.
Applying for DUA
Applicants must first apply for state unemployment benefits. If deemed ineligible or if benefits are exhausted, they may qualify for DUA. Required documentation must be submitted within 21 days of the application. The NC Department of Revenue can provide tax returns for those unable to access their documents due to the hurricane.
Assistance is available via the DUA Hotline at 919-629-3857, operational from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional information can be found on the website des.nc.gov/dua.
