Unemployment in Athens Reaches New Low
In a notable shift for the Athens metropolitan area, the unemployment rate dropped to 3.0% in July. This marks a decrease of 0.5 percentage points from both the previous month and the same period last year, as reported by the Georgia Department of Labor.
Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes hailed this trend as a “clear victory,” emphasizing that unemployment fell across all metro areas and regions throughout Georgia.
The labor force in Athens stood at 111,658 in July, reflecting a reduction of 1,171 from June but an increase of 4,988 compared to July 2025. The number of employed residents in the metro area was 108,288, showing a decrease of 585 from the previous month but an increase of 5,360 year over year.
Employers in Athens reported having 106,400 jobs available in July. This figure is 1,100 less than in June; however, it represents an increase of 3,700 from the previous year.
Initial unemployment claims were recorded at 220 for July, which is an increase of 10 from June and 20 from July 2025.
