Brennan Center’s Commitment to Fighting Authoritarianism and Abuse

Looking Forward for Our Democracy

Reflections on the Recent Election and Future Challenges

The recent election, deemed free and fair, showcased the enhanced election infrastructure established since 2020. Election officials and law enforcement collaborated effectively, ensuring the voting process proceeded smoothly with minimal issues.

The electorate has chosen leaders with explicitly authoritarian goals, suggesting a vision marked by fear and division, and voters made these choices knowingly. In response, the Brennan Center has committed to countering authoritarianism and misuse of power, engaging with allies to illuminate and oppose these threats.

The Brennan Center offers in-depth expertise on historical statutes that former President Donald Trump has indicated he might use to expand executive authority and facilitate mass deportations. Relevant laws include the Insurrection Act, the National Emergencies Act, and the Alien Enemies Act. Efforts are underway to resist the politicization of the Justice Department and national legislation designed to restrict voting access.

Additionally, the Brennan Center remains vigilant about the expanding influence of substantial financial contributions in political campaigns. While both political parties had significant funding, the New York Times reports that one-third of the president-elect’s campaign funds were sourced from a select group of billionaires, indicating a concerning trend.

The Center plans to probe crucial questions raised by the election. According to exit polls, voters ranked the health of democracy as their top concern. Understanding and addressing this concern is a priority for future efforts.

Recognizing that current governance structures have failed to deliver progress for many, the Brennan Center aims to foster innovative thinking and help develop the next agenda. Despite the current risks to American democracy, the Center is committed to continuing its advocacy efforts to protect democratic principles.
