Political Ad Misrepresents Arizona Congressional Candidate’s Tax Stance
A recent advertisement by the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), a political organization based in Washington D.C., has sparked controversy by presenting misleading information about Democrat JoAnna Mendoza’s stance on tax policies. The ad suggests that Mendoza is against tax breaks for working-class Arizonans, whereas her actual comments were targeted at tax cuts benefiting the wealthy.
CLF, which allocates financial resources to support Republican candidates for the U.S. House, is focusing its efforts on Arizona’s hotly contested congressional race, where Mendoza is running against current Representative Juan Ciscomani.
The advertisement’s voiceover asserts that “Mendoza lobbied to make your life more expensive” and includes a clip of Mendoza stating, “there should be no new tax cuts, no new tax credits, or sales tax exemptions.” This segment of the ad is also featured in another campaign ad from Ciscomani.
These remarks by Mendoza were originally made during a 2020 virtual forum organized by the Democrats of Greater Tucson. In the complete video, Mendoza articulates that Republican initiatives divert funds from public services and education to provide tax relief for the affluent and large corporations. She emphasizes her opposition to further tax reductions that would solely benefit these groups.
In her own words, Mendoza stated, “We know that there have been enormous tax breaks and tax cuts for wealthy folks and for corporations. So moving forward, there should be no new tax cuts, no new tax credits, or sales tax exemptions.”
On the contrary, Rep. Juan Ciscomani has thrown his support behind the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which introduced a $1 trillion cut to Medicaid to facilitate tax cuts mainly aiding the wealthy. The legislation is predicted to result in health insurance losses for up to 500,000 Arizonans.
Kyle McCarthy, a spokesperson for Mendoza’s campaign, commented, “JoAnna Mendoza is focused on lower costs and tax cuts for Arizona families, not tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations.”
