Rep. Mike Lawler Faces Backlash for Anti-Abortion Group Fundraising

New York Congressman Faces Criticism for Fundraising Efforts

New York Representative Mike Lawler’s attendance at a recent fundraising event has sparked controversy regarding his stance on reproductive rights. Over the weekend, Lawler participated in the 39th Annual Love Life Fundraising Banquet, an event benefiting the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Rockland, which is located within his district.

The center, often classified as a crisis pregnancy center, has come under scrutiny from critics who argue that such establishments aim to discourage women from considering abortions, frequently using medical misinformation to do so. Planned Parenthood highlights that many of these centers are not officially recognized as medical clinics, yet they often create an impression of medical legitimacy through the use of white coats and examination tables, despite lacking medically trained staff. For more detailed information, visit Planned Parenthood’s report here.

This is not the first time Lawler has been linked to the center; he attended a similar event in October 2023 and was photographed with the center’s executive director. Following this, he supported the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, a measure intended to protect federal funding for these types of centers. The bill passed in the House but was halted in the Senate.

Despite these activities, Lawler’s campaign website emphasizes a “mainstream position” on abortion, promising to support access to contraception. Yet, the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Rockland’s website labels emergency contraception as an “abortifacient,” a term that medical experts largely dispute.

The fundraising group, Love Life, has publicly advocated for the defunding of Planned Parenthood, a major provider of diverse health services, including affordable contraception. More information on their position can be found here.

As Lawler gears up for his third term campaign, the topic of abortion rights is anticipated to remain a prominent issue. Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson Riya Vashi criticized Lawler, saying, “Mike Lawler has spent his entire career attacking reproductive freedom. Lawler can’t hide the reality of his anti-choice extremism, and it won’t bode well for him come 2026.”
