Ford Launches Innovative Learning Labs to Equip Students with In-Demand Skills

Ford Motor Company, in collaboration with Ford Philanthropy and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), is set to introduce twelve new learning labs across Michigan. These labs aim to prepare over 7,300 K-12 students for careers in the automotive and skilled trade sectors.

Mary Culler, President of Ford Philanthropy, emphasized the initiative’s hands-on approach, stating, “I think it just opens up their skill sets beyond sitting in a classroom and learning, being lectured to. Or this actually provides an exciting hands-on way for students to identify what makes them excited; what do they want to pursue?”

The initiative represents a $1.54 million investment, with funds allocated for a variety of supportive services. According to Culler, the goal is to address barriers that may impede some students more than others by offering comprehensive support beyond just funding.

Chris Rishko, Director of Talent Solutions at MEDC, described the program as a “win-win-win.” He noted, “Ford is going to get the talent that they need to expand. The students are going to be able to have skills that are actually in demand — skill sets that are going to be needed now and into the future. And then Michigan as a whole continues to be at the leading edge of innovation.”

These labs will offer age-specific programs. Elementary students will learn through “simple machines,” while high schoolers will have access to advanced manufacturing tools and dual enrollment options, as detailed in a press release by the MEDC.

The program also addresses a demographic shift described as the “edge of a silver tsunami,” referring to the impending retirements within Michigan’s workforce. Culler highlighted the importance of early exposure to career pathways to sustain a strong workforce, stressing, “Right now, it’s important just because of the whole greater ecosystem, the population demographics and such, that we do this kind of investment now because if we wait, we’ll miss the bus.”

These educational labs are scheduled for completion in 2026.
