Tragic Boating Accident in Lake Tahoe: Eight Dead After Sudden Storm
The peaceful waters near D.L. Bliss State Park turned perilous on June 21 when the 28-foot vessel, Over the Moon, capsized. A sudden weather shift caught the recreational boat off guard, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is spearheading the investigation.
Early that morning, the Over the Moon set off from Tahoe City with four passengers. The group expanded to ten adults after picking up six more at a nearby marina, and they spent time anchored at the scenic Emerald Bay. Despite clear skies initially, by mid-afternoon, the weather took a drastic turn for the worse.
A surviving passenger recounted to authorities the terrifying experience of battling waves as large as 10 feet, compounded by unexpected hail and snow. The vessel’s engine failed amidst the turbulent conditions, and a massive wave ultimately overturned the boat.
Hikers in the vicinity witnessed the tragic event unfold, with one calling 911 at 2:58 p.m., while another hiker and a California State Parks lifeguard assisted in the rescue efforts. Responders from multiple agencies arrived as the storm subsided by 4 p.m.
Six bodies were recovered on the day of the incident, with two more found the following morning. The two survivors, one wearing a life jacket and the other holding onto one, were taken to a hospital for treatment. Investigators have found no evidence of the boat striking any object, nor was there any fuel spillage detected.
In a tragic turn, several life jackets remained untouched in their original packaging. The Over the Moon, a recent build from 2023, was valued at nearly $393,000. Toxicology results for those who perished are still pending.
