Unemployment Rates Rise in 93 North Carolina Counties in May 2025

In May 2025, unemployment rates not adjusted for seasonal variations increased in 93 of North Carolina’s counties, according to a government press release. Edgecombe County reported the highest unemployment rate at 5.3%, while Currituck County had the lowest at 2.9%. Among the state’s metropolitan areas, Rocky Mount recorded the highest unemployment rate at 4.9%, while Raleigh had the lowest at 3.1%. The statewide unemployment rate, also not seasonally adjusted, stood at 3.6%.

The report highlighted that 98 counties had unemployment rates of 5% or below in May, a decrease from 100 counties in April. Two counties reported unemployment rates between 5% and 10%, while no counties exceeded a 10% unemployment rate. Over the past year, 80 counties saw an increase in unemployment rates, while nine counties experienced a decrease, and 11 remained unchanged. Thirteen metro areas experienced increases in unemployment rates over the year, while two remained steady.

The number of employed workers across the state fell by 24,009 in May to a total of 5,084,132. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed individuals increased by 12,032, reaching 192,431. Compared to the previous year, the number of employed workers decreased by 36,949, and the number of unemployed increased by 10,459. The release emphasized the importance of considering year-over-year changes due to the significant seasonal patterns in employment estimates.

The next update on unemployment figures is scheduled for release on Friday, July 18, 2025, when the statewide unemployment rate for June 2025 will be revealed.
