Proposed Tax Changes in Athens: What Voters Need to Know
As the November 3rd election approaches, voters in Athens-Clarke County face a significant decision regarding local taxation. On the ballot is a referendum known as the Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST), which aims to adjust the current tax structure by increasing the local sales tax by 1%. This proposal, if approved, seeks to alleviate property tax burdens by utilizing the additional revenue generated from the sales tax hike.
Positioned as the second-to-last item on the ballot under the title “One Percent Floating Local Option Sales and Use Tax,” the FLOST referendum is crucial for determining the future fiscal landscape of the region. Should both the FLOST and the ESPLOST renewal pass, the combined sales tax in Athens-Clarke County would rise to 9%, marking a notable change in the local tax rate.
To shed light on the implications of the referendum, Mayor Kelly Girtz engaged in a discussion with Alexia Ridley, where he elaborated on the anticipated benefits and outcomes of the proposed tax adjustments. The dialogue emphasizes the dual objective of the referendum: to balance the fiscal needs of the county while providing tax relief to property owners.
