Sheen has founded a debt-buying organization tailored to assist those enduring financial difficulties in south Wales. This initiative is spotlighted in a forthcoming Channel 4 documentary titled Michael Sheen’s Secret Million Pound Giveaway, which examines how financial entities benefit from individuals locked in debt cycles.

“The shocking thing is that people have started having to use credit cards, overdrafts to pay for basics, to pay for necessities, rather than luxuries or anything like that,” Sheen explained. “So the debt that I was able to buy included credit card debt, overdrafts, car finance, that kind of stuff.”

Known for his humanitarian contributions, Sheen initially hesitated at the thought of such a financial commitment. He shared his reservations on BBC’s The One Show, noting his lack of £100,000 to “throw around.” Yet, an encounter in a Port Talbot café with a woman discussing the emotional challenges faced by steelworkers compelled him to intervene.

This effort follows closely after the shutdown of a significant blast furnace in Wales, signaling the end of traditional steel production and triggering mass unemployment.

“You need some help to get through these times,” stated Sheen. “People are getting into spirals of debt. Once you’re underwater, it’s very hard to get out again. That’s why I wanted to do this — to draw attention to the fact that this is going on, and there is a way to change it.”
