Explore KUNR Youth Media: Radio Journalism for High School Students

Meet our KUNR Youth Media students for fall 2026

Discover the KUNR Youth Media Program

Every fall and spring, the KUNR Youth Media program offers high school students an exceptional opportunity to delve into the world of journalism. With sessions running from 2:15 to 4:15 p.m., these young interns receive hands-on training in radio and broadcast journalism, along with media production skills.

Guided by a dedicated program coordinator and a WCSD educator, the students are immersed in the professional environment of media, learning to create impactful audio stories and amplify the unique voices of their community. The program also includes tours of KUNR’s facilities and the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno, where students can record their projects under expert supervision.

This initiative, which spans an entire semester, culminates in the broadcast of the students’ stories on KUNR and the publication on KUNR.org. Through this experiential learning approach, participants gain essential insights into public media operations while acquiring practical skills with industry-standard tools.

The Youth Media Coordinator is pivotal in providing comprehensive guidance on the nuances of audio journalism production, ensuring that students adhere to high standards of media practice. The program is committed to fostering a supportive and innovative educational atmosphere, nurturing the creative potential of each participant. Before any work is published, the Managing Editor at KUNR meticulously reviews submissions to maintain alignment with the station’s established media standards.
