Anticipated Clash: Nebraska’s 2nd District Congressional Debate Set to Unfold
In a significant political event, Nebraska Public Media is collaborating with the Omaha World-Herald to present a highly anticipated debate for the 2nd District Congressional seat. Scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. Central time, this debate promises to be a pivotal moment in the election cycle.
The debate will feature Republican Brinker Harding and Democrat Denise Powell, taking place at Nebraska Public Media’s Ron Hull television studio. This event will be accessible to a wide audience through live broadcasts on television, radio, and digital platforms.
Moderating the 60-minute discourse will be Aaron Sanderford, managing editor of the Omaha World-Herald, alongside Jackie Ourada, managing editor of Nebraska Public Media News. Together, they will pose a range of questions covering various pressing issues.
Covering all of Douglas and Saunders counties and the western part of Sarpy County, the 2nd District is often referred to as the “Blue Dot.” This nickname stems from the district’s history of supporting Democratic presidential nominees in 2008, 2020, and 2024, contributing one of Nebraska’s five electoral votes in those years. Despite this, the district has predominantly elected Republicans to the House of Representatives, with only one exception since 1994.
The upcoming midterm elections have drawn national interest, as Democrats aim to gain control of the House. This has led to C-SPAN agreeing to broadcast the debate to a national audience, highlighting its importance.
Brinker Harding and Denise Powell are competing to succeed Republican Don Bacon, who has opted not to seek reelection. Joining them in the race is Libertarian candidate Eric Foreman.
Harding has been a member of the Omaha City Council since 201. His previous roles include chief of staff and economic development director for former Mayor Hal Daub.
Conversely, Powell’s career spans a range of roles in communications and public relations across Nebraska and beyond. Notably, she co-founded Women Who Run Nebraska in 2017, a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging and supporting women candidates for public office throughout the state.
