Tragic Collision Adds to Rising Fatalities in Athens-Clarke County
In a disturbing trend, Athens-Clarke County is witnessing an average of one fatal accident monthly. The latest incident involves the death of a 78-year-old local woman, Helen Blackmon. The collision occurred on September 10, 2026, when Blackmon attempted a left turn from Jefferson Road onto Lakeland Drive, resulting in a crash with a southbound 2025 Chevrolet Traverse.
Blackmon was behind the wheel of a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox during the accident. Both she and the other driver were taken to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, Blackmon passed away from her injuries on September 13, 2026.
Marking the ninth fatal traffic incident in Athens this year, the accident has prompted ongoing investigations by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
