Debate Set for 8th Congressional District Candidates on WVIA-TV
The upcoming debate between the 8th Congressional District candidates is set to be a significant event, providing a platform for the nominees to address key issues. WVIA-TV will host this pivotal debate, offering voters a chance to hear directly from the candidates.
Republican candidate U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan and Democratic candidate Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti have both agreed to participate in the debate. This 55-minute session is scheduled for October 29 at 7 p.m., taking place at WVIA’s Sordoni high-definition studio located in Jenkins Township.
Rob Bresnahan confirmed his attendance through a news release, where he stated, “Voters in Northeastern Pennsylvania deserve to hear directly from the candidates about the issues that matter most to them and I look forward to highlighting the work we’ve done for them in Washington, from passing the largest tax break in history for working-class families to introducing a bipartisan bill to lower food costs.” He further criticized Mayor Cognetti’s policies, labeling them as influenced by “liberal Portland values.”
Cognetti’s campaign also issued a statement later in the day, expressing her commitment to the debate. She remarked, “This election is a choice between a reformer who will shake up a broken Washington and fight for families, or a congressman who in his short time in office has shown he is only interested in serving himself.” Her statement also included allegations against Bresnahan concerning his activities in office.
The public will have the opportunity to attend the debate, with WVIA planning to release instructions on how to sign up. For those unable to attend in person, the debate will be broadcast live on WVIA-TV, WVIA Radio, and live-streamed on WVIA.org and the station’s YouTube channel. Additionally, WVIA will make the debate accessible to other local media outlets for broadcasting purposes.
