80-Year-Old Man Dies in Multi-Vehicle Collision in Athens-Clarke County
A tragic accident involving three vehicles resulted in the death of an elderly man in Athens-Clarke County on Thursday morning. The incident prompted a swift response from local police and has left the community seeking answers.
According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, the crash occurred around 6:00 a.m. on September 3 near Highway 29 North and Talley Crossing. Wayne Voyles, 80, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox when he mistakenly traveled north in a southbound lane, colliding with a 2022 Toyota Tacoma.
The impact of the collision caused the Tacoma to crash into another southbound vehicle, a 2022 Toyota Highlander. Following the accident, all involved drivers were transported to a nearby hospital. Tragically, Voyles succumbed to his injuries, whereas the drivers of the Tacoma and Highlander sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The authorities have classified this incident as the county’s eighth fatal crash this year. Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and are encouraging anyone with pertinent information to reach out to Master Police Officer Lewis.
