New Childcare Facilities to Address Needs in North Lake Tahoe
In a significant development for families in North Lake Tahoe, the Boys & Girls Club plans to convert two former office buildings into a much-needed early learning center and a teen center. This initiative is in response to the pressing demand for childcare options in an area where existing resources are strained.
The upcoming early learning center aims to cater to children from infancy up to age five, providing care for up to 50 children daily. This move is particularly timely as families face long waitlists and closures of local childcare providers, leaving them with limited choices.
CEO Mindy Carbajal of the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe highlighted the community’s needs, stating, “We’ve been asked that question so many times through the years: can you extend this programming to middle school ages? What about my high school kid?”
While the teen center is still in the planning stages, it promises to offer innovative features such as a fabrication lab, an e-gaming area, and podcasting studios. These facilities are designed to provide middle and high school students with a productive environment to learn new skills and engage in activities outside of school hours.
Moreover, the early learning center aims to provide additional support for working families, especially during unexpected school closures, thus offering greater flexibility for parents.
The ambitious project is made possible through the generous backing of the Dave and Cheryl Duffield Foundation, which is not only donating the buildings but also funding the necessary renovations. Additional financial support is being secured through state funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and contributions from the local community.
Construction and renovation work are projected to commence in spring 2027, with the aim of opening the new facilities by 2028.
