Beth Osborne’s Journey: Advocating for Abortion Rights in Nevada

A Las Vegas woman’s abortion story—and why she’s voting yes on Question 6

Beth Osborne’s Journey from Personal Experience to Advocacy

Beth Osborne, a writer and activist based in Las Vegas, is campaigning for the approval of Question 6 on the upcoming November ballot in Nevada. Her goal is to ensure that abortion remains safe and legal in the state. Osborne’s journey began with a personal experience during her teenage years, which she shared with Bonnie Fuller, a special correspondent for The Nevadan.

An Abortion at 18: A Defining Moment

On her 18th birthday, Osborne underwent an abortion in Miller’s Creek, North Carolina, a small conservative town where she grew up. As a high school senior, her relationship with her 24-year-old boyfriend was complicated, yet she wasn’t adequately cautious about birth control. When she realized she was pregnant, Osborne sought guidance from a close friend and an OB-GYN, who confirmed her pregnancy and advised her about the legal requirements for abortion in North Carolina.

Faced with the necessity of parental consent, which was unfeasible due to her mother’s battle with leukemia, Osborne was unable to disclose her situation to her mother. She pursued a judicial waiver instead, recounting her personal circumstances to a judge, but her request was denied. Nevertheless, reaching her majority age allowed her to proceed with the abortion within the permissible timeframe.

Facing Opposition and Moving Forward

Osborne recalls encountering protesters on the day of her procedure, who told her she was “going to hell.” Despite the challenges, including a mandatory pre-abortion ultrasound, Osborne felt relief after the procedure. Reflecting on her decision, she acknowledges it as the best choice for her at that time, enabling her to pursue higher education and avoid a potentially harmful relationship.

Advocating for Reproductive Rights in Nevada

Now, as a resident of Nevada, Osborne is actively working with organizations such as Planned Parenthood and Indivisible to support Question 6, a constitutional amendment initiative that seeks to protect abortion rights in the state. This effort has become increasingly critical following the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade in 2022, which has led to more restrictive abortion laws across the country.

Osborne’s personal experiences have shaped her advocacy. After her abortion, she pursued a college degree, leading to a successful career as a writer. She emphasizes the importance of ensuring future generations have the same rights to reproductive healthcare that were available to her.

Personal Challenges and Medical Battles

Osborne’s later life was marked by medical challenges, including a rare diagnosis of ovarian cancer at 23, necessitating further surgeries and ultimately a hysterectomy. Despite these hardships, Osborne stands by her decision, highlighting the importance of personal choice and autonomy in reproductive matters.

Community and Resistance to Stigma

Through her activism, Osborne found community support, particularly during her involvement with Indivisible Las Vegas. Inspired by a network of progressive advocates, she has become a leading voice in promoting awareness of reproductive rights and opposing the stigmatization of abortion.

Osborne’s commitment to advocacy is driven by a belief that legislative decisions about abortion should be divorced from government interference, emphasizing that such choices should remain between a woman and her healthcare provider.

As Nevada prepares for its upcoming election, Osborne continues to champion the cause, aiming to secure constitutional protection for abortion rights and counter the narrative of shame surrounding the issue.
