Community Honors Victims on Second Anniversary of Apalachee High School Shooting
The somber milestone of two years since the tragic Apalachee High School shooting is being marked by the community, with September 4 now designated as Apalachee Remembrance Day. Governor Brian Kemp’s proclamation honors the lives lost, including students Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn, along with teachers Christina Irimie and Richard ‘Ricky’ Aspinwall.
Reflecting on the ongoing impact, Governor Kemp stated, “Two years on the pain of September 4 is still here, and it will continue to be for quite some time. But the people of Winder and Barrow County are also still here showing up every day, working to help each other, putting one foot in front of the other, while we all move forward while never forgetting.”
The shooter, Colt Gray, who was only 14 at the time of the incident, has been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole after pleading guilty to 55 charges. His father, Colin Gray, faced conviction on multiple counts, including second-degree murder for supplying the firearm. He is currently serving a 15-year sentence but is appealing the decision.
