Major Road Paving Project Set to Impact Montage Mountain Visitors
Visitors heading to Montage Mountain in Lackawanna County for entertainment or leisure activities may face travel disruptions due to a significant road paving project. The initiative is set to improve infrastructure around the area, affecting access to popular venues.
County commissioners have approved a $3.57 million contract with Pennsy Supply Inc., based in Pittston Township, to pave Montage Mountain Road along with several adjoining roads. The work will include Glenmaura National Boulevard, starting from a railroad crossing near PNC Field and extending to the intersection with Montage Mountain Road, as well as Preate Drive and Lakeview Commons.
The project is scheduled to commence in the spring, with completion targeted by year-end, according to Brian Jeffers, the county’s chief of staff, as announced during a commissioners’ meeting broadcasted on ECTV’s YouTube channel.
Coordination efforts are underway to mitigate traffic congestion, which frequently occurs when baseball games coincide with concerts. Collaborations with LiveNation, which organizes concerts at the Pavilion at Montage Mountain, and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, who play at PNC Field, aim to alleviate potential traffic issues.
Montage Mountain Resorts, hosting a water park, and Cinemark, offering movie screenings at Glenmaura National Boulevard, are other key attractions in the area. Montage Mountain Road itself stretches approximately 3.2 miles, while Glenmaura National Boulevard is slightly under 2 miles. The entire paving project will cover about six miles, as detailed by county engineer Frank Summa.
To fund this endeavor, the county will utilize a short-term loan, which will eventually be repaid through revenue from a $5 vehicle registration fee, as outlined in a legislative cover sheet. Future plans include paving the remaining section of Glenmaura National Boulevard, from Montage Mountain Road to Route 502, which was delayed due to the need for culvert repairs, Summa explained.
