Audit Reveals Financial Mismanagement in Newland, NC: Key Findings

State auditor investigation finds financial mismanagement in Newland

Financial Irregularities Uncovered in Newland, North Carolina

In a recent development, North Carolina state auditors have identified several financial oversights in the town of Newland. This revelation has raised concerns about the town’s governance and financial management practices.

An investigation conducted by the state auditor revealed that Newland did not submit the required financial statement audits for the years 2024 and 2025. This lapse is a significant breach of compliance and accountability standards expected of municipal bodies.

Another major finding from the report highlighted that over $400,000 was paid by Newland to a contractor for debris removal and maintenance services at the Roby Shoemaker Wetlands and Family Recreation Park. However, it was discovered that the contractor lacked the necessary licensing, raising questions about due diligence and contract management within the town administration.

Moreover, the town experienced a financial loss exceeding $15,000 due to a fraudulent wire transfer, further compounding the financial management issues.

In addition, the audit report pointed out that Newland disbursed more than $63,000 to a business owned by the then-sitting mayor for mowing services, notwithstanding the fact that the business had been dissolved. This situation suggests potential conflicts of interest and the need for stricter oversight.

The town officials have acknowledged these findings in a formal response to the state auditor and have committed to developing a compliance plan to address the issues raised.
