Leadership Transition at University of Michigan as C. Cybele Raver Steps Up as President

A new chapter is about to begin at the University of Michigan with the anticipated appointment of C. Cybele Raver as its next president. Raver, who currently serves as Vanderbilt University’s Provost and Vice Chancellor, is set to become the 17th president of Michigan, pending approval by the university’s Board of Regents in September.

Universally acknowledged for her expertise in developmental social science and academic strategy, Raver is hailed as a “nationally recognized leader in higher education.” Her upcoming role marks her as the second woman to ever lead the Ann Arbor institution.

“Michigan’s scale and impact across research, education, economic growth, and public service are unmatched and I’m eager to build on its remarkable legacy. I look forward to working alongside faculty, staff, students and alumni to lead Michigan forward with clarity and confidence,” Raver expressed in a statement from the university.

Raver’s journey at Vanderbilt, which began in 2021, was marked by impressive achievements, including exceeding $1 billion in annual research spending and extending the university’s influence to campuses in multiple states, including New York, California, Tennessee, and Florida.

Commenting on Raver’s appointment, Michael Behm, chair of the U-M Board of Regents, remarked, “She understands what it takes to lead a complex, world-class university — and she shares our unwavering belief that Michigan has been, is now, and must remain the best university in the country.”

Raver’s academic background is equally noteworthy, with a Ph.D. in developmental psychology from Yale University. Her appointment is expected to fill the vacancy left by Domenico Grasso.

The leadership role at Michigan has seen significant turnover since the departure of longtime president Mary Sue Coleman in 2022. Coleman’s interim presidency followed the dismissal of Mark Schlissel due to misconduct. Successive appointments, including Santa Ono and Kent Syverud, faced obstacles, with Ono moving to a position at the University of Florida only to be rejected, and Syverud stepping down due to health concerns.
