Davie County Opens New Early Childhood Center to Address Childcare Need

Davie County opens new preschool to combat childcare shortage

New Early Childhood Learning Center Set to Open in Mocksville

In response to a pressing demand for childcare services, Davie County Schools is launching a new early childhood learning center in Mocksville. The facility, known as the Eagles Nest Preschool, will open its doors next week.

For the past 18 months, district, county, and community leaders have been engaged in discussions to tackle the childcare shortage that has been exacerbated by the recent closure of several established centers. Notably, at the conclusion of the previous school year, 103 children remained on the waiting list for the district’s Pre-K programs.

Heath Belcher, the Superintendent, explained that with backing from the commissioners, the school system is taking the initiative to bridge some of this gap by managing a private facility that will levy tuition fees. Belcher stated, “If we can figure out a way to make that work and present or develop a model program that is effective, then hopefully that can be replicated and at least start to address the need in other places.”

Located within the Brock Performing Arts Center, the new program will cater to 85 children aged between 1 and 4 years. Unlike the district’s existing Pre-K offerings that adhere to the regular school calendar, this program will operate year-round from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Additional details about the program can be accessed through the district’s website.
