Stokes County Planning Board Challenges Hyperscale Data Center Proposal
In what appears to be a recurring theme in Stokes County, the planning board has once again voiced opposition to a proposed hyperscale data center in Walnut Cove. The board’s latest decision on Thursday night resulted in a 5-2 vote against a rezoning request for what is known as Project Delta. This decision comes after significant backlash from the local community, primarily due to environmental concerns.
The development firm behind the proposal, Engineered Land Solutions, has faced criticism for its plans, with residents worried about possible adverse effects on the environment. This marks the second instance where the planning board has advised against the proposal, following a similar recommendation made in December 2025. Despite the board’s previous disapproval, county commissioners had initially approved the rezoning, citing the potential economic benefits. However, that approval was later annulled, necessitating another review of the rezoning request.
In light of the planning board’s latest decision, members acknowledged the possibility that county commissioners might disregard their recommendation once more. To prepare for such an outcome, they outlined a series of protective measures designed to mitigate potential impacts if the project proceeds. These safeguards include commitments from the developer to prevent electricity rate increases for local residents, safeguard the Dan River from wastewater pollution, and implement continuous air quality monitoring at the site.
The final verdict on the rezoning request will be delivered by the county commissioners at a public hearing scheduled for September 8.
