School Districts Evaluate Smart Glasses Amid Privacy Concerns
As technology continues to evolve, educational institutions are grappling with the implications of new devices in the classroom. Smart glasses, capable of recording video, snapping photos, and streaming content, are at the center of a debate over privacy and academic integrity.
The Carson City School District has implemented a ban on smart glasses to address these concerns. The decision, according to Superintendent Andrew Feuling, aims to maintain a secure and respectful learning environment for students.
Cheryl Macy, the principal of Carson High, highlighted the potential risks associated with these devices. Discussions arose on whether students might use smart glasses to capture images of test materials, particularly during crucial exams like the ACT and AP tests, and share them with peers.
Macy noted that the reaction from parents has been largely supportive. “Everybody wants to know that when their kid comes to school, they’re safe from being recorded against their will and their knowledge,” Macy stated.
In parallel, the Washoe County School District is also examining the implications of allowing smart glasses on campus. Their evaluation considers various aspects, including student safety, privacy concerns, and adherence to state and federal regulations.
