Continued Decline in US Murder Rate

The United States continues to see a significant decrease in its murder rate, with an 18% reduction in homicides observed in the first half of the year compared to the equivalent timeframe in 2025.

This striking reduction in US violent crime is according to the Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ). The CCJ claims that the US homicide rate has probably reached a “historic low”.

Moreover, the decline in the US murder rate isn’t the only positive trend in crime statistics. The CCJ has reported that four different categories of crime have each seen reductions of more than half in recent years. These include homicide (51% lower than 2022), carjacking (73% lower than 2023), residential burglary (56% lower than 2018), and vehicle theft (51% lower than 2023).

Although the White House has presented this data as a victory for the Trump administration, it’s important to note that US crime rates have been on a downward trend for some time. This trend encompasses most types of crime, with a few exceptions such as shop-lifting and drug offenses.

CCJ’s president, Adam Gelb, emphasized, “Murder and other crime rates are falling across the map, in cities with different political leadership, housing and economic conditions, policing and prosecution strategies, violence reduction models, and levels of federal enforcement activity.”

Gelb further added, “While local policies and programs undoubtedly matter, the consistency of the decline suggests macro-level forces are also playing a significant role.”
