In the heart of Luzerne Borough, the community is rallying in support of a family devastated by a tragic fire that claimed the life of a young teenager. Tributes of balloons and candles line the front of the home on Bennett Street, where 15-year-old Connor Vest died on his birthday.
Neighbor Jayson Conden shared his gesture of remembrance, saying, “I just went out and I bought a bunch of Matchbox cars to honor him. It’s a heavenly birthday gift type thing, and it’s showing my respect to him and his family.”
Luzerne Borough Officer’s Quick Response
An early morning patrol turned into a rescue mission for Luzerne Borough Police Officer Chris Vecchi, who discovered the house engulfed in flames at 5:49 a.m. Saturday. According to the department’s Facebook post, Officer Vecchi successfully alerted the household and neighboring homes to evacuate in time.
Despite these efforts, Connor and a family pet succumbed to the blaze, while three other family members were hospitalized. Multiple local fire and EMS units responded, and the incident remains under investigation by local and state authorities.
Community Support Through GoFundMe
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to aid the Vest family, raising over $12,000 by Monday afternoon. The funds are intended to cover immediate needs, medical bills, funeral costs, and to support the family in their journey to recovery.
“A devastating house fire claimed the life of an incredible boy, Connor, on what should have been a day filled with celebration — his birthday,” the campaign’s page notes, highlighting the magnitude of the loss and the family’s dire situation.
‘Connor Strong’ Initiative
Connor’s legacy continues within the Wyoming Valley West School District, where he was a student. The district expressed its condolences on Facebook, acknowledging the impact of the tragedy on the school community.
In memory of Connor’s love for Transformers, particularly Optimus Prime, a special fundraiser named “Connor Strong” has been organized by 570 Apparel. This initiative will run through August 21, channeling support to the grieving family.
