The Great Reno Balloon Race Kicks Off with New Schedule
In Reno, a glance at the sky often reveals a hot-air balloon floating by, but during the Great Reno Balloon Race, the scene transforms as dozens of balloons fill the air above Rancho San Rafael Park. This iconic event draws thousands of people eager to witness the spectacle.
Event organizer Shila Morris shared that due to past concerns about the event’s popularity causing overcrowding on weekends, the race will start earlier this year. It will begin on a Thursday instead of the usual Friday.
“Balloons have always been seen on Thursday mornings,” Morris explained, “but previously, Thursday did not feature the Super Glow Show or the Dawn Patrol. Now, all four days include these three events. You have the Super Glow Show, the Dawn Patrol, and the Mass Ascension.”
Morris anticipates that this adjustment will allow more people, especially local residents with busy weekends, to enjoy the festivities. Additionally, discounted parking will be available on Thursday morning.
This year is particularly special as it marks the 45th anniversary of the race, recognized as the largest free hot-air ballooning event globally. Morris emphasized the community’s high regard for the event, evident in its scale and popularity.
Morris suggests arriving well before the 5 a.m. start time to secure a good viewing spot. “Bring your blankets,” she advised. “It’s chilly at first, but it warms up later. And don’t worry, time flies by. You’ll love it. Every moment is a delight.”
The Great Reno Balloon Race runs from September 10 to 13. No matter which day you choose to attend, the display promises to be breathtaking.
