As the Democratic candidates vie for the 7th Congressional District in Wisconsin, they confront the challenge of appealing to a predominantly conservative electorate while maintaining their party’s principles. In a recent debate, the trio highlighted their plans for national issues and their approaches to working across the aisle.

During a debate hosted by WJFW in Rhinelander, candidates Chris Armstrong, Ginger Murray, and Fred Clark shared their stances on key topics such as immigration, healthcare, and the war in Iran, while emphasizing the importance of holding the Trump administration accountable. Armstrong was notably vocal about impeachment, stating, “The answer is absolutely. I mean, it is actually the primary foundation of my campaign, which is we need to hold this administration accountable.”

While Armstrong is firm on impeachment, Murray and Clark expressed the need for thorough investigations into the president’s actions. Clark remarked, “I can’t tell you how I would vote on that, but what I can tell you is that the investigations need to begin, that we have all the evidence that we need for violations of the law and corrupt activities that Americans of all political persuasions are seeing and they’re appalled by.”

The district, historically held by Democrats but solidly Republican since 2011, presents an uphill battle. Representative Tom Tiffany’s decision not to seek reelection opens the field for both parties, with six Republicans initially filing to run for the seat.

Addressing Wisconsin’s concerns, the Democratic candidates examined various issues:

War in Iran

  • Clark argued for congressional control over war actions, criticizing the president’s disinterest in resolving the conflict.
  • Murray opposed the president’s strategy and expressed concerns about alienating allies, stating she wouldn’t vote to fund the war.
  • Armstrong pointed to the economic impact, noting the difficulty in withdrawing without losing face.

Immigration Enforcement

  • Murray called for reform in ICE operations and the citizenship application process.
  • Armstrong opposed Trump administration policies, advocating for accountability in ICE and Border Patrol.
  • Clark criticized the disorganized enforcement under Trump and urged Congress to prioritize visa reforms.

Healthcare

  • Armstrong supports public healthcare options as a necessity.
  • Clark noted pre-existing healthcare issues, emphasizing the need to address recent cuts first.
  • Murray aimed to collaborate with Republicans to improve healthcare plans, asserting the value of having options.

Despite political differences, Clark and Murray showed willingness to collaborate with Republicans, with Clark expressing optimism for “a new kind of politics.” Murray, a “proud Northwoods native,” plans to focus on education, economic stability, and healthcare, while Armstrong’s campaign prioritizes sensible agriculture policy, tax reform, and impeachment efforts.
