A young teenager’s quick actions have been lauded after he helped save an elderly woman with dementia, who had wandered miles in the intense Arizona heat.

Fourteen-year-old Royal Cothrun chose to intervene when he encountered an elderly woman in distress while biking in Gilbert, Arizona, last month. Temperatures soared above 100 degrees, and she seemed disoriented and overheated.

Royal said, “I don’t even know, she just looked like something was wrong, so I started talking to her.”

The woman, identified as Teresa Morgan, had recently been diagnosed with dementia. After visiting a nearby grocery store, she lost her way and ended up far from her home.

Recognizing her distress, Royal decided to assist. “I knew it was hot. She was sweating,” he explained.

Instead of continuing his ride, Royal stayed with Teresa, guiding her to a shaded area and talking to her until she could recall the phone number of her son, Jeff Morgan. Jeff arrived promptly, just before emergency services from the Gilbert Fire Department.

Jeff Morgan expressed his gratitude, saying, “It’s incredible really, what he did. Just so lucky, so fortunate that he ran across her and he cared enough to stay with her and to take care of her.”

Firefighters acknowledged that Royal’s intervention was crucial. “The outcome could have been, would have been much, much worse had he not done what he did,” one firefighter noted.

Royal is set to receive honors from the Gilbert Fire Department and the Air National Guard. However, for Teresa’s family, the greatest accolade is the title he has already earned: hero.
