Grandfather Mountain’s Profile Trail Reopens After Extensive Repairs
Two years have passed since Hurricane Helene severely impacted Western North Carolina, yet hikers are now welcomed back to the Profile Trail on Grandfather Mountain. The once-storm-battered path is available for exploration following significant restoration efforts.
The trail endured extensive damage from fallen trees and eroded sections due to the hurricane’s force. Kris Anne Bonifacio from North Carolina State Parks highlighted the challenges faced during the restoration process. “The big complicating factor with Grandfather is that it’s a very sensitive ecological area,” she explained. “It’s actually a United Nations Biosphere Reserve.”
To protect the unique flora and fauna, crews implemented careful measures. They focused on sustainable reconstruction, enhancing drainage systems and reinforcing structures to mitigate future risks. The upper trail segment and campsite are now accessible, though the lower loop remains closed as it requires further work after being completely washed away.
This trail is one of several in the state still under repair, with many needing new bridges. Nonetheless, Bonifacio expressed optimism about the progress made since the hurricane. “Of the 315 miles of trails initially closed by the storm, about 300 have reopened,” she noted, underscoring the strides made in restoring access to North Carolina’s natural landscapes.
