Michigan Gubernatorial Candidate John James Receives Utility Donations Amid Rate Hikes
As he embarks on his campaign for governor, Republican Rep. John James has garnered significant financial backing from major utility companies, drawing attention due to rising utility costs affecting Michigan residents.
Throughout James’ political career, he has secured a total of $48,529 in contributions from DTE Energy, CMS Energy, and their employees. Notably, this year, Garrick Rochow, the CEO of Consumers Energy, contributed $2,500 to James’ campaign.
Consumers Energy, serving 6.7 million Michigan residents with gas and electricity, recently sought approval for a $456 million rate increase. This request follows a $277 million rate hike sanctioned by state regulators just under three months prior. Should the new increase be authorized, utility bills could rise by up to 9.8%.
In a similar vein, DTE Energy requested a $474 million rate increase in April, following a $250 million hike that had already been implemented the previous month.
DTE Energy justifies the proposed hikes by citing the need to maintain reliable service. However, critics highlight that the company reported $1.5 billion in profits last year and has reportedly not paid federal income taxes for over ten years.
Amidst these developments, Americans nationwide are grappling with escalating utility expenses linked to inflation and the conflict in Iran. Last year, John James lent his support to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which critics argue may worsen the situation by abolishing clean energy tax incentives.
Michigan’s Democratic Attorney General, Dana Nessel, has publicly stated her intent to oppose all proposed utility rate increases.
James is set to face off against businessman Perry Johnson and former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox in the Republican primary on August 4. The Democratic candidate is anticipated to be Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
