Winston-Salem’s New Youth Curfew Sees First Citations
In Winston-Salem, the newly implemented youth curfew has led to its initial citations, marking a significant step in the city’s effort to enhance safety among minors.
Authorities reported that a 15-year-old was charged following a vehicle break-in on Byerly Road, which took place in the early hours of July 3. The incident occurred at 2:30 a.m., a time that directly violates the recently enacted Youth Protection Ordinance.
The ordinance, effective last month, restricts individuals aged 17 or younger from being in public spaces between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. This breach resulted in the teenager being transported to a juvenile detention center, with additional charges laid against his mother for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Initially, law enforcement had indicated that the ordinance’s enforcement would prioritize issuing warnings, providing rides home, and offering diversion programs. However, this case underscores the serious consequences for violations during prohibited hours.
