The rescue unfolded on a Wednesday evening, with Avory immediately sensing danger as he noticed the man’s distress underwater. Reflecting on the moment, Avory said, “There was this man in the pool, like unconscious underwater, almost shaking, maybe, and my adrenaline kicked in.”
Despite several people around, no one seemed to react to the emergency, prompting Avory to take matters into his own hands. “No one was doing anything, so I put on my goggles. I went underwater,” he shared. “I grabbed him up and I just felt really bad because there was no way that I was going to let another man die today. He’s a human being. He should be treated as such.”
Displaying remarkable bravery and strength for his age, Avory succeeded in bringing the man to the surface and out of the pool. Once on the deck, the man’s friend took over and administered CPR, while another bystander called emergency services.
The Lexington Fire Department reported that the man was transported to a hospital, where he was in serious condition. Avory’s father, Sean Woolery, expressed immense pride in his son’s heroic effort. “I’m proud of him. Somebody, when I was walking up here, somebody said, ‘Thank you, you taught him how to swim,'” he mentioned.
Avory’s decisive actions ensured the man had a crucial chance at survival, highlighting the impact one young person can have in a life-threatening situation.
