When a planned field trip lost its funding, School Resource Officer Sean Reavie took it upon himself to ensure 144 students from Greenway Middle School’s After the Bell summer program would not miss out on a promised celebration. He funded an entire movie theater rental for a private screening of Toy Story 5, complete with cinema treats like popcorn, candy, and drinks.

For numerous students, this outing marked their first-ever visit to a movie theater, adding a layer of excitement to the experience.

Coordinator Katie Jenkins faced challenges when the budget for the annual summer finale fell short, prompting her to seek help from Officer Reavie.

“She told me how much she needed, and I gave it to them so they could go,” said Reavie.

The cost of the theater event was below $2,000, but the value it provided to the students was immeasurable.

Reavie stated, “If they needed more, I would have given them more. You can’t break a promise to a child. They come here knowing that there’s a reward at the end.”

Greenway Middle School, located in Phoenix, is a Title I school, where numerous families encounter financial difficulties.

With 20 years of service in law enforcement, Reavie has gained an intimate understanding of the obstacles faced by many students.

“Some of them live in a different life than most of us would comprehend, and they just haven’t seen a lot of good things with their own eyes,” he explained. “Their family doesn’t have a car. Parents, if they have two, work multiple jobs. Half of them have never been to a water park before. They’ve never been across the other side of the highway before.”

Reavie has made it his personal goal to help young people experience new and positive events.

Previously, he invested over $3,000 of his own money to facilitate a trip for students to Hurricane Harbor. His dedication to children’s welfare is further exemplified by his founding of Put On The Cape: A Foundation For Hope, inspired by his past role as a child crimes detective.

“It dawned on me that little kids who were scared responded to superheroes,” he said. “So I started a superhero-based foundation called Put On The Cape: A Foundation For Hope.”

Before the movie began, Reavie shared a meaningful message with the students.

“As you get older in life, help other people, as a payback to me,” he encouraged them. “Would you do that? That’s all I ask of you.”

Officer Reavie’s thoughtful action aims to inspire future acts of kindness, creating a ripple effect of goodwill in the community.
